LGBTQIA+ Affirming

Mental Health Care in

New York and California

Common Challenges LGBTQIA+ Individuals Face in Mental Health Care:

  • Fear of judgment or discrimination from providers

  • Past experiences of being misunderstood, minimized, or pathologized

  • Difficulty finding psychiatrists who are affirming and knowledgeable

  • Concerns that gender or sexuality will be treated as the “problem”

As a queer psychiatrist, I understand firsthand how crucial it is to feel safe, seen, and respected in a mental health setting. My practice is built on affirming, evidence-based care that centers your lived experience, not just your symptoms.

Whether you're navigating identity, relationships, trauma, or mood symptoms, you deserve support that recognizes the unique stressors faced by LGBTQ+ individuals without reducing you to them. Together, we can build a path toward healing that honors who you are.

Expert Psychopharmacology

As a psychiatrist familiar with the medical needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals, I take into account how gender-affirming hormones and other medications may interact with psychiatric treatments.

Whether you're taking testosterone, estrogen, or medications related to HIV prevention or care, I’ll work collaboratively with you to ensure your mental health medications are safe, effective, and aligned with your broader health goals.

My approach is informed, respectful, and grounded in current clinical research—so you never have to educate your provider just to receive competent care.

Integrated Treatment

Combined treatment from one provider means that you won’t have to re-tell your story over and over again with different providers.

As a psychiatrist trained in both psychodynamic therapy and psychopharmacology, I offer a unique and integrated approach to mental health care.

  • LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy with a relational, insight-oriented focus

  • Psychiatric evaluations tailored to your individual history and goals

  • Thoughtful, collaborative medication management when needed

  • Support for emotional regulation, attachment wounds, and identity development

This holistic model supports healing at both the emotional and biological level.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. My practice is grounded in affirming care for people across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, including those who are queer, trans, nonbinary, intersex, or questioning. I actively work against bias in clinical care and approach each patient with curiosity, respect, and a commitment to understanding their unique experience.

  • Absolutely. Your gender and sexual identity are not mental illnesses. They are a part of who you are and deserve to be understood in the context of your life, not treated as problems to be fixed. I welcome open conversations about identity, relationships, and lived experience without judgment.

  • Yes. I have worked with many trans and nonbinary individuals around issues including gender dysphoria, social and medical transition, family acceptance, and co-occurring concerns like anxiety, depression, and trauma. I can also write letters of support for gender-affirming medical care when appropriate.

  • I recognize that identity is layered. Being LGBTQ+ can intersect with race, ethnicity, immigration status, religious background, and more, each shaping your mental health journey. I approach these complexities with cultural humility and strive to create a space where all parts of you can be explored safely.

  • I provide both psychotherapy and medication management. Depending on your needs, our work may involve talk therapy. My therapy style is rooted in psychodynamic principles but I often use CBT, or ACT as needed. Please see medication management for my philosophy on medications.

  • Many LGBTQ+ individuals have been harmed by providers who were uninformed or invalidating. If you’re coming in with skepticism or anxiety, that’s completely valid. I welcome conversations about past experiences and will work at a pace that feels comfortable and respectful to you.
